A short history of moving images
Moving images were created and projected long before the discovery of cinematography and film. During the 19 th century many inventions were made for creating moving images. These inventions were based on the phenomenon of the persistence of vision . The principle of the Persistence of vision maintains that a visual imprint remains in the brain for a short period after the object is withdrawn from view. When images of successive action (slightly different from one another) pass in front of our eyes in a certain speed, we can see the image animated. All those inventions or Optical Toys as they are named, have in common that each image is viewed for an instant (one 16 th of a second) and the view is interrupted by a neutral stage, otherwise the eye would only see a blur.
Let's have look in some of the moving images inventions of the late 19 th century.
