MOVING IMAGES workshop

· The Magic Latern (since 17th century)

The magic lantern could project hand-painted (or later photographic) glass slides.

It had a candle (or later a lamp), a condensing lens that focused the light onto the slide to project and a lens tube that magnified the projection.

It was not simply a still image projector, but if the slides contained images of successive motion and if they were moved quickly through the Magic Lantern, the projected image appeared to be animated.
