MOVING IMAGES workshop

Cinematographe - Lumière brothers

The Optical theater was soon eclipsed in popularity by the photographic film projector of the Lumière brothers. They first developed the technology for recording of sequential images on a flexible film base (1895) and technics for projecting the films. They patented a number of significant processes - most notably the creation of sprocket holes in the film strip as a means of getting the film through the camera and projector.

They called their invention Cinematographe.
The camera shot films at 16 frames per second.

The first film shot with the Cinematographe camera was the “La Sortie de l’usine Lumiére à Lyon” in 1895
